Adult-child interaction is central to the HighScope approach. HighScope educators believe in guiding children throughout their exploration of the environment, which is carefully planned. The sequence of Plan-Do-Review provides a structure and routine, but where children make an intentional choice about what they are going to do that day, implement what they planned to do and then reflect back on their actions during the review stage. “The process strengthens the child’s executive function --their ability to regulate and organize themselves so they can stay focused on what they have chosen to do and solve problems that arise.” (“Curriculum Overview,” n.d., para. 5)
HighScope Educational Reasearch Foundation(n.d, para. 1) states that their “Comprehensive curriculum,” focuses on the following areas:
- Approaches to learning
- Social and emotional development
- Physical development and health
- Language, literacy, and communication
- Mathematics
- Creative arts
- Science and technology
- Social studies
