Philosophy:
HighScope aligns its beliefs and values to those of NAEYC’s developmentally appropriate practices, and other quality developmental standards set by programs such as HeadStart (Epstein, n.d.). The HighScope approach emphasizes children’s “Active participatory learning,( “Curriculum Overview,” n.d., para. 1) ” which allows children to have direct experiences that will support their growth and knowledge of the world. HighScope encourages a “Shared control,” (“Adult-Child Interaction,” n.d., para. 2 ) manner of interaction between adults and children, so both parties have a role in learning experiences. The environment of a classroom is set-up to be a predictable sequence, while “Children’s interests and choices are at the heart of HighScope programs.” ( Epstein, n.d., para. 3). Hands-on experiences and exploration are seen as a gateway into one’s learning, and the role of the educator is to support and provide quality materials that will aid in a child’s whole development.
