HighScope is a constructivist, research- based approach, with ideas from John Dewey and Jean Piaget’s theories of active learning and development (Morrison, 2009). HighScope is used throughout many programs nationally and internationally, including HeadStart programs in the United States and places abroad, such as South Africa and the Netherlands(Epstein, n.d.). Features such as a children participating in a daily sequence of “Plan-Do-Review”(“Daily Routine,” n.d, para. 3 ), focusing learning experiences around 8 curriculum content areas that specifically correspond to state and national standards, and 58 key developmental indicators to assist in assessing children, make HighScope unique to other early childhood education approaches (Epstein, n.d.).
